When experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, you may feel isolated and alone.  It is important that as you consider your options, you also know your rights.  We want to ensure that you fully understand your rights and that you access ethical and high-quality services.

What to Expect

Rights for Expectant Parents Who Choose an Adoption Plan

You have the right to…

  • be treated with dignity and respect.
  • participate in the entire adoption process.
  • select the adoptive family.
  • choose the name for the original birth certificate.
  • see, hold, and spend time with your baby when he or she is born.
  • agree to have ongoing information and contact with the adopting family through visits, letters, pictures, and phone calls.

Rights for Birth Fathers

You have the right to…

  • be notified of the a pending adoption plan.
  • 30 days to establish paternity, or to choose to do nothing.
  • file a paternity action to establish legal rights.
  • choose to participate in the adoption plan.
  • choose to receive services from Hand in Hand.

Your pregnancy counselor can help you work through challenges and address questions along the way.  Some of those questions might be…

  • Who is the father of my child?
  • What if I don’t want the father of my child to know that I’m pregnant

  • What if the father of my child and I do not agree on which choice is best for our family?
